  1. Child Poverty in Rich Countries: 2005 (PDF)

    A UNICEF Report found that the U.S. ranks second to worst among 26 OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries in terms of child poverty. The study says: "Protecting children from the sharpest edges of poverty during their years of growth and formation is both the mark of a civilized society and a means of addressing some of the evident problems that affect the quality of life in the economically developed nations."

  1. Education at a Glance: 2006 Edition 2005 Edition

    The 2006 edition of Education at a Glance enables countries to see themselves in the light of other countries' performance. It provides a rich, comparable and up-to-date array of indicators on the performance of education systems and represents the consensus of professional thinking on how to measure the current state of education internationally.

    The indicators look at who participates in education, what is spent on it and how education systems operate and at the results achieved. The latter includes indicators on a wide range of outcomes, from comparisons of student's performance in key subject areas to the impact of education on earnings and on adults' chances of employment.

The data include such characteristics as the numbers of students and teachers, number of high school completers and the averaged freshman graduation rate, and revenues and expenditures.   8. The Condition of Education: 2006 National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) report summarizes important developments and trends in education using the latest available data.   14. High Schools in the United States: How does your local high school measure up?

    A new tool on the Alliance website allows users to compare the performance of high schools in their area with other high schools from around the state. Based on "promoting power," an indicator developed by researchers at Johns Hopkins University, the database provides 2003 and 2004 data for high schools, searchable by state, congressional district, or zip code.(posted Jan. 4, 2007)

  16. Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2005

    Two Census reports were released. The first was based on data compiled from information collected in the 2006 Annual Social and Economic Supplement (ASEC) to the Current Population Survey (CPS).

    The second report was based on tabulations of economic data from the 2005 American Community Survey (ACS) , a powerful new tool that provides timely and updated information about the nation's changing and diverse population every year. The data are available for nearly 7,000 areas including for the first time all congressional districts, and counties, cities and American Indian/Alaska native areas of 65,000 population or more.     Data from the Annie E. Casey Foundation's 2006 KIDS COUNT Data Book are now available in an easy-to-use, powerful online database, "State Level Data Online", that allows you to generate custom graphs, maps, ranked lists, and state-by-state profiles; or, download the entire data set as delimited text files.

    Measuring Up 2006 consists of the national report card for higher education and fifty state report cards. Its purpose is to provide the public and policymakers with information to assess and improve postsecondary education in each state.     This NCES publication provides projections for key education statistics. It includes statistics on enrollment, graduates, teachers, and expenditures in elementary and secondary schools, and enrollment, earned degrees conferred, and current-fund expenditures of degree-granting institutions. For the Nation, the tables, figures, and text contain data on enrollment, teachers, graduates, and expenditures for the past 14 years and projections to the year 2015. For the 50 States and the District of Columbia, the tables, figures, and text contain data on projections of public elementary and secondary enrollment and public high school graduates to the year 2015.     The most up-to-date children's data available on a uniform basis.

  2. The Common Core of Data (CCD)

    National database of information on public primary and secondary schools and local education agencies, can now be easily accessed using the "Build a Table" tool. Users can choose to view data by school, district, county, state, Metropolitan Statistical Area, and Core Based Statistical Area. Data from five CCD surveys, dating back to the 1986-1987 school year, as well as selected data from the Census 2000 School District Tabulation, are available.
