Ann-Marie Wiese

Ann-Marie Wiese is a second year doctoral student at the University of California,
Berkeley in the Education in Language, Literacy, and Culture Program. Her areas
of specialization are early literacy, policy, and instructional strategies with
regards to culturally and linguistically diverse students. Currently, she works
as a research assistant on the High Performance Learning Communities research
project with Dr. Eugene E. Garcia
and Dr. Lily Wong Fillmore.
Before entering the doctoral program, Ann-Marie worked as a primary grade Spanish bilingual teacher in Salem, Oregon and Watsonville, CA. She is a native Spanish speaker and holds a California BCLAD teaching credential. While in Oregon, Ann-Marie served as Bilingual Teacher Leader at her elementary school and as primary author of a successfully funded Title VII comprehensive school grant. In addition, she served on a Math Assessment Committee for the State Department of Education. In addition to her current studies, Ann-Marie continues to substitute teach in local elementary schools.
Upon completing her doctoral degree, Ann-Marie plans to pursue a career as teacher educator and educational researcher. She is particularly interested in how to better prepare teachers for the multilingual, multicultural classroom, and plans to continue research which documents how teachers translate policy into instruction, focusing on early literacy for students of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
