"Language Rights and the Education of English Learners"
San Francisco, CA
  • The 2005 UC LMRI Annual Conference focused on Language Rights and the Education of English Learners.

Recent legal rulings and policy initiatives, such as Proposition 227, have limited the opportunities to use and learn non-English languages in our schools. At the same time, the growth of global commerce underscores the value of developing multiple languages. An added problem is the "hyper-implementation" of existing policies, such that existing policies are often implemented in much more restrictive ways than they need be.

The 2005 Conference will provide a forum for discussing the origins and impacts of language policies, language rights and their implementation in the United States and elsewhere.
