May 7-8, 2004: "Family Literacy and English Learners"

The 2004 UC LMRI Annual Conference will focus on Family Literacy and English learners. With the growth of state and federal accountability, including the Federal No Child Left Behind Act, the need to improve the academic achievement of English learners has never been greater. One strategy for improving the reading development of English learners is to promote family literacy activities, such as the frequency and quality of shared storytelling and reading books.

Concha Delgado-Gaitan, Ph.D., Author, Involving Latino Families in the Schools (forthcoming, Corwin Press) and Literacy for Empowerment: The role of parents in children’s education (New York Falmer Press; 1990)

Marjorie Faulstich Orellana, Ph.D., UCLA, Graduate School of Education and Information Sciences (GSE&IS)

Author of several studies (Harvard Educational Review, Reading Research Quarterly) on the role of immigrant children as translators and interpreters for their families.
