The Fifteenth Annual UC LMRI
Conference
held May 3-4 at The Berkeley City Club in Berkeley, California
The topic for this year's Conference was “Rethinking the Teaching Profession for English Learners." Featured Keynote Speakers were Guadalupe Valdés and Lily Wong Fillmore. Approximately 160 participants enjoyed the two day conference, held at the historic Berkeley City Club designed and built in 1929 by architect Julia Morgan who was the architect of Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA.
This year the Conference included nine sessions, one panel and two keynote addresses.
Friday's keynote speaker, Guadalupe Valdés of Stanford University, spoke on “The Monolingual Bias in American Education: Implications for Linguistic Minority Students and Their Teachers."
On Saturday afternoon, Lily Wong Fillmore of UC Berkeley gave her keynote address entitled "What Do Teachers Need to Know About Language to Prepare Linguistic Minority Students for High-Stakes Tests?"
Other highlights included:
• Standing-room-only sessions on Professional Development for Teachers of English
Learners and Literacy Development of English Learners
• An after-dinner panel on Friday given by Californians Together providing an
update on Legislation Affecting English Learners
• A closing panel on Saturday presented
by UC LMRI's Director and Associate Director addressing the Inequitable Treatment
of English Learners in California's Public Schools
